The Dream and Inspiration for my First Quilt
I am a stay at home mom and pregnant with my second beautiful girl. We have made some big adjustments to our budget since the decision for me to be at home. Decisions which we stand by and have embraced. Yet, because of this we are unable to make choices like we did with our first little girl. I wanted to do something valuable and special for this little girl in the making to show her how much she means to us, an example of how much she is already loved. This is the prelude to my first quilt!
I wanted the quilt to be the inspiration for her nursery. We will be buying some crib sheets to match the quilt! The first step in the whole process was asking my mother in law who is an amazing seamstress to finance as my birthday gift my first quilting adventure. She is a gem who decided to go with me on this crazy quilting adventure.
I have a regular sewing machine, nothing too fancy. I also invested in a solid cutting service. It included a hard surface on which to cut my squares. I found the basic design I wanted for my first quilt simply by searching through pinterest. I decided on 3" squares which means I cut them as 3 1/2" inch squares so that allowed for a 1/4 seam as I sewed each side to the square. The whole front side of my quilt is simply 3" squares. Nothing too fancy, I didn't need a pattern. I wanted to start small so I chose a baby size quilt. It ended up being 11 blocks across and 14 blocks down. This ended with the quilt being about 33 inches across and 42 inches down. This is a great manageable size for your first quilting adventure. You can use your dining room table, living room floor, etc to lay everything out.
